A combination of $296 million in state and federal funding will provide public safety improvements in Texas, including bullet resistant vests for police officers and programs to reduce violence in schools.
"Nothing is more important than the safety and security of Texans, and this grant funding will strengthen our efforts to prevent and combat crime while also supporting victims and survivors," Gov. Greg Abbott said in a statement. "Protecting public safety requires a comprehensive approach, and each of these recipients plays an essential role in keeping our communities safe. Texas thanks the hundreds of award recipients for serving their fellow Texans and for working to build a safer and stronger Texas."
The funding included 87 grants totaling $11.9 million to provide training for people who work in programs to help women who are victims of violent crimes. The grants will also fund programs to fight human trafficking and improve police radio communications, the governor said.
The grant money will be available to various Texas programs and services; any organizations interested in applying for grant dollars during the fiscal year 2022 cycle should contact their local Council of Government office for information on regional requirements and timelines. Public safety grants recently disbursed by the governor's PSO included money to organizations in homeland security, violence against women, juvenile justice and border security.
