Using CARES Act funding, Lone Star College was able to provide 6,000 laptop computers to students this semester.
The Woodlands Township Board of Directors highlighted the impact of the CARES Act in a list of funding recipients published in a press release. Lone Star College, which has seven colleges and boasts a $3 billion annual economic impact, was able to purchase 6,000 computers for students.
“The coronavirus pandemic has exposed the digital divide and the urgency with which we must work toward a solution,” LSC Chancellor Stephen Head said.
Computers are handed out much like library books in the LSC Laptop Loaner Program.
The majority of the students the college serves are Hispanic, 42.6% and Black 13.3% with white students comprising 29.7% of the student body. Females comprise 61.4% of the student body. The system is one of the fastest-growing in the state and expands the Texas tax base by approximately $627.8 million annually with an increase of state income and business productivity. the website reported.
